UNDERSTANDING MEMORY PROCESSES

MEMORY IS THE PROCESSES THAT IS USED TO ACQUIRE, RETAIN, AND LATER RETRIEVE INFORMATION. THE MEMORY PROCESS INVOLVES THREE DOMAINS : ENCODING, STORAGE, AND RETRIEVAL.

  • ENCODING : PROCESSING INCOMING INFORMATION SO IT CAN BE ENTERED INTO MEMORY.
  • STORAGE : MAINTAINING INFORMATION IN MEMORY FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.
  • RETRIEVAL : ACCESSING OR RECALLING STORED INFORMATION FROM MEMORY SO IT CAN BE USED
LEARNING PYRAMID

MEMORY STRUCTURE

DEFINITION : CAPACITY TO REMEMBER
FUNCTIONS : 1. STORAGE OF INFORMATION
                        2. RETRIEVAL OF INFORMATION
                        3. SYSTEM SPECIFIC FUNCTION
STORAGE : PUTTING INFORMATION IN MEMORY
RETRIEVAL : GETTING INFORMATION OUT OF MEMORY
MEMORY : COMPUTER SOFTWARE
BRAIN : COMPUTER HARDWARE

MEMORY STRATEGIES

  • FOCUS YOUR ATTENTION
  • STUDY REGULARLY
  • ANALYSE
  • AVOID CRAMMING
  • MAKE ORGANISED NOTES
  • CREATE MNEMONIC DEVICES
  • EXPLAIN AND PRACTICE
  • APPLY AND ASSOCIATE
  • PICTURE OUT
  • TEACH OTHERS
  • DIFFERENT LOCATIONS AND TIME
  • HEALTHY BODY, SHARP MIND
  • ID THE KEY- FIND OUT WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT.

  • LINK - CONNECT TO OTHER IDEAS
  • CHUNK - BREAK APART INTO SMALL GROUP
  • LIST - MAKE A LIST AND CHECK IT TWICE
  • REHEARSE - REPEAT OVER & OVER
  • VISUAL - DRAW PICTURE IN YOUR MIND

UNDERSTANDING CONCENTRATION

  • THE ACTION OR POWER OF FOCUSING ALL ONE'S ATTENTION.
  • CONCENTRATION REQUIRES A GREAT AMOUNT OF EFFORT AND TIME. EVEN IF YOU PRACTICE IT FOR ONE WEEK OR A MONTH, THE RESULT WON'T BE PRODUCTIVE IF YOUR BRAIN ISN'T PERFORMING WELL.
STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

READING / STUDY SYSTEM (SQ3R)

SURVEY : SCAN THE TEXT AND IDENTIFY ITS STRUCTURE.
QUESTION : ASK YOURSELF ABOUT EACH SECTION.
READ : READ THE WHOLE TEXT QUICKLY. DON'T STOP. EVEN THERE IS SOMETHING DIFFICULT THAT YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND.
RECITE : TRANSFER INFORMATION TO LONG TERM MEMORY BY ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
REVIEW : PRACTICE AND REHEARSE THE MAIN IDEAS THEN REFLECT ON KEY LEARNING CONCEPTS.
